Laser scanning is ideal for recording complex existing infrastructure, such as power plants, water works, refineries etc. This example from S. Africa provides a detailed point cloud from five scan positions. Initial view of this data looks very complex, however using data slicing tools show the high quality of what was recorded.
Surveys like this are commonly used for clash detection: investigating where existing infrastructure will coincide with proposed constructions.
